What are plantar warts and who gets them?

Plantar wart surgeries are commonly performed at our clinic, for patients whose plantar warts have not responded to topical treatments, have been present for a long time, or are complex in their nature. Plantar warts are warts that form on the soles of the feet. They are medically referred to as verrucae pedis lesions. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus penetrates the skin surface (typically through a scrape or cut) and proliferates in the epidermal layer, causing a thickened, raised lesion. Plantar warts are a very common problem affecting the feet of people of all ages and genders. Most commonly however, they occur in children and teenagers. Risk factors for developing plantar warts include frequently walking barefoot, using public showers or swimming pools in bare feet, having broken or injured skin on the feet, or having a weakened immune system.

Which patients can benefit from plantar wart surgeries?

There are a number of over the counter topical treatments available for warts. There are also other treatment options that podiatrists can offer, however some patients’ lesions do not respond to these, so a plantar wart surgery may be recommended. Similarly, patients whose warts are thickened, complex, or very painful may require plantar wart surgeries.

It is important to remember that because of their location on the base of the foot or between the toes, plantar warts are subject to the pressures, forces and inherent friction that happens naturally with daily activity such as walking, running and standing. This can make them incredibly uncomfortable.

When you choose to consult with a podiatrist at Hills District Podiatry, you can have absolute confidence in our experienced team, who have performed countless plantar wart surgeries over the years. Your podiatrist will be able to offer their expert advice on what treatments will be most effective for your plantar warts.

How are plantar wart surgeries performed and what are the expected outcomes?

Plantar wart surgeries are performed as minor procedures in our clinic. Patients are usually able to have the procedure performed during a one hour consultation, making it a convenient and definitive solution for their plantar warts.

The procedure is performed with local anaesthetic applied to the area. The skin is cleaned and prepared. Your podiatrist will then make a small incision directly around the wart, removing it with a curette. Medication is then applied to the wound, to prevent bleeding, assist healing, and treat any virus fragments that may remain in the wound. Your podiatrist will then dress the wound appropriately, applying cushioning and protection to allow it to heal, whilst providing comfort.

It is recommended that you arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home following your procedure, as the application of local anaesthetic can make it difficult to operate car pedals safely.

In the majority of patients, further plantar wart surgeries at the same site are never required. Wound healing typically takes between 2-4 weeks. Patients can expect very minor, if any, scar formation.

Plantar wart surgeries are a reliable, permanent solution for plantar warts.
