What is a bunion and how is it treated?
A bunion is a type of deformity that occurs in the big toe, on one foot or both. The cause in some cases is unknown, however it is often a product of genetics and made worse by ill fitting shoes. Bunions can cause a build up of painful callus which may contribute to pain and swelling. A bursa can also develop over the joint.
What are some of the problems associated with a bunion?
- Bunions can change how the foot functions. This can cause pain and make it difficult to walk.
- Swelling and inflammation at the base of the big toe.
- Infection
- Degenerative changes (Arthritis)
- Change the alignment of the 2nd toe, causing it to also become deformed.
- Finding shoes that fit and are comfortable can become a problem.

A corn is an area of thick skin that can be quite painful if left untreated. Corns are very similar to callus but in a concentrated area. Corns typically form in high pressure areas on the bottom or sides of our feet. At Hills District Podiatry, we are experts on corns and callus and removal is often completely painless. Corns and callus can be caused by the way we walk or shoes that are too tight. The podiatrists at Hills District Podiatry will not only remove the corn but we will also establish the cause.
